North Norfolk Railway (NNR) needed an express inverter solution to help with a restoration of a vintage diesel locomotive.
The NNR is often referred to as the Poppy Line, as 19th century poet Clement Scott famously described the area as ‘Poppyland’.
It offers a roughly 10 mile round trip through an area of outstanding natural beauty. Visitors can enjoy a ride on a historic steam train, stopping at picture postcard stations from a bygone era.
When restoring their D5631 diesel locomotive, built in the 1960s, NNR needed a rugged inverter capable of withstanding harsh temperatures and vibration. This was required to convert a 110Vdc output from an auxiliary generator to a 230Vac input for a replacement boiler.
The boiler is used to generate steam, which is then piped through the carriages of the locomotive to warm the heat exchangers. The installation was critical to the restoration as the locomotive is used for various train based events, such as murder mystery evenings and comedy dining.
